The Road to Pinwheel Place Pt. 1

Join us on the road to Pinwheel Place! This road begins with my lifetime dream of opening a non-profit home for young children who are at risk for abuse and/or neglect. I am happy to announce that my dream is fast becoming a reality. For soon, with your help, Pinwheel Place will open it's doors for at -risk children somewhere in Monmouth County.

The first leg of my journey started in the summer of 1989 when after studying, Community and Family Services at the University of Delaware, I volunteered for a one year commitment to work as a child care worker for Casa de Esperanza de Los Ninos in Houston, Texas. It was here that I met a team of loving individuals who were dedicating their lives to providing abused children of Houston a nurturing home environment until they could be returned to their family or put up for adoption. The work was hard but wonderfully rewarding as you saw the love the caregivers provided show up on the faces of the young children in our care. After a few months I was given the responsibility of running one of the houses that made up Casa's community. I left Houston after a year with a firm belief that, if possible, this was how I wanted to live my life.... providing help to those who are too young to help themselves.

Upon returning to my home in New Jersey I continued my journey when I became a child care worker at a group home in Jersey City. It was here that I met my eventual daughter. After several months of providing her care, I became her foster mom and subsequently her legal guardian. The 24 years I have spent raising her was not a change to my dream but merely a detour. She is now following in my footsteps as she graduated from Seton Hall with a minor in Social work and is currently working in St. Clare's Home for children in the field of child care. Would you be surprised that she now wants to work with me in developing Pinwheel Place? My dream is now shared and their are two of us "on the road" in this journey!

Please come back soon and find out what we did last summer... on our journey's second leg.
